our approach

At HorseWorks, we create opportunities for change through practical, hands-on experiences. We work with children, young people (8+years)  and adults who may be disengaged, stuck or shut down— people who may not respond to traditional, talk-based support.

We use the TheHorseCourse approach, developed by a world leader in evidence-based equine-assisted interventions. With over 15 years of direct service delivery, TheHorseCourse has built a strong evidence base demonstrating significant, measurable improvements for both young people and adults.

We teach, rehearse and repeat key skills in an immersive and fun way to help people develop key resilience and social skills through experience.

All of our activities are ground-based only, so no previous experience with horses or riding is needed. Tasks are carefully selected and guided by our facilitators, using specially trained horses to provide immediate and non-judgemental feedback. Their responses give participants an opportunity to see the impact of their actions, try something differently and experience the results of their change.

This makes it possible to work on things such as confidence, communication, social skills, emotional regulation and resilience  in a way that is practical and meaningful.

Rather than simply talking about change, participants have the opportunity to experience it, practise it and repeat it.

Every session is adapted to the needs of the people taking part. We meet participants where they are and create opportunities for them to experience successes and overcome challenges.
